News is spreading out from Thailand today that one of WD (Western Digital) production plants is under water due to the latest floods in Thailand. WD apparently makes 33% of the worlds hard drives (With Seagate being the other largest also having some issues with Flooding), delivering to a wide range of markets from Desktop PC's to games consoles. Rumours are floating (no pun intended) about that their now may be a shortage over December and technology insiders are predicting a rise of up-to 200% in prices and it may take month for supply levels to return to normal.

HP to Evaluate Strategic Alternatives for Personal Systems Group

Following an announcement at HP board of directors meeting on the 18th of August HP is going to re-evaluate the consumer PC production and development side to the business PSG (Personal Systems Group). This means that HP could either sell or re brand all of its consumer products and side step out of the market. This is an extremely large step for one of the markets largest producers of consumer PC's, but hardly surprising with the current economic climate. In the mean time HP promises to up its advertising in the UK and heavily push its higher end products (A strategy which apparently Acer is now also going for). At the same time the demise of WebOS and all the ex-palm products that HP have now dropped don't help anyone gain confidence in HP products and ongoing support that they may or may not provide.
