What is Cat5e

Category 5e cable (Cat 5) is a twisted pair of cables for carrying signals. This type of cable is used in structured cabling for computer networks such as Ethernet. It is also used to carry other signals such as telephone and video. The cable is commonly connected using punch down blocks and modular connectors. Most Category 5 cables are unshielded, relying on the twisted pair design and differential signalling for noise rejection.

Cat6

 

Cat6 cable is almost identical to Cat5e except it is a higher quality cable designed to cause less interference and produce higher data rates. At present it is not in high demand due to the additional high cost and the decrease in distance it can cover compared to Cat5e.
